KEY POINTS

  • "Mulan" release date in July is looking doubtful
  • Lockdown extensions in big cities can affect the film's release
  • Disney is confident about realsing it in July

Disney will find it difficult to release the highly anticipated action film “Mulan” in July if the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread. While theatres across the country are eagerly waiting to reopen and get the business started again, there have been concerns about lockdown extensions that may affect the plans of the industry.

The release of some of the films that were supposed to be out in July is now looking doubtful, according to Screen Rant. Some places like the LA County are planning to extend the lockdown, which means theatres may not be able to reopen soon.

Some locations where the coronavirus hasn’t spread should be able to reopen their economies, however, the bigger cities that form the bulk of the lucrative market for the film industry may not be able to meet the health and safety standards to reopen. Releasing big budget movies in such a situation could be a problem.

LA County's Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer has already hinted at the lockdown continuing until the end of July. If theatres in Los Angeles can’t reopen in time, it appears that the release date of “Mulan” will be delayed.

The Niki Caro directed flick has already been delayed because of the coronavirus and it will be difficult to push the release date even further because Disney has merchandising commitments. It remains to be seen what the studio will decide in this situation.

So far, Disney has been confident about releasing the movie on schedule. CEO of the company Bob Chapek recently told CNBC that he and his team are optimistic about the date they have chosen for Caro’s film.

One thing that Chapek is banking on is the “pent-up demand” after people across the country have been forced to stay at home and not venture out unnecessarily. The CEO talked about it from his home during a conference call, USA Today reported.

“Mulan” will be Disney’s first big movie after the lockdown is lifted, and Chapek is keeping his fingers crossed. As far as the other films are concerned, the CEO and his team are going to have a wait and watch approach and they are going to evaluate each movie on a case-by-case basis.
