Will Smith talked about his new miniseries, "Women of the Movement," and why it is important to tell its story during an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight on Thursday.

The 53-year-old actor admitted that he used to fixate on his popularity as an actor, but things have changed since. He is now more concerned about the stories he's telling.

"There was a time in my life, where I was concerned with being a movie star and that concern has moved on," he said, adding: "I want to make stories that make me smile, I want to tell stories that make me cry and I want to tell stories about the triumph of the human spirit."

Smith went on to share that he now wants to "create things that have some contributing value to the human family."

"Women of the Movement," which is streaming on Hulu, YouTube TV and FuboTV, is a great example of such stories. The series' plot revolves around a woman named Mamie Till Mobley, who seeks justice following her son's brutal murder.

Smith serves as an executive producer on the show, alongside Jay-Z.

The final episode of the miniseries, which stars Adrienne Warren, Cedric Joe, Julia McDermott, Tonya Pinkins, Ray FisherCarter Jenkins and Glynn Turman, came out Thursday.

Last month, the cast members of the show opened up about the importance of Smith and Jay-Z's involvement in the project.

"It's definitely exciting, especially growing up and being fans [of them]," Joe, who plays Emmett Till, said. "It's motivation. I didn't get to talk to them but knowing that they're part of the project is special."

"It means a lot," Fisher, who portrays Gene Mobley, shared. "It means people will pay attention and people will watch the piece, which I think is extremely important."

Smith will be next seen in the TV series "This Joka," which is expected to come out this year. The actor will also appear in the thriller action film "Emancipation," which is helmed by director Antoine Fuqua.

His lineup of upcoming movies also includes "The Council," "Fast and Loose," and "Bad Boys 4," which are currently under pre-production. He will also star in the sequel of the 2017 flick "Bright" as well.
