It’s been over four years since “Mad Max: Fury Road,” the fourth film of the venerated post-apocalyptic series, hit theaters and rocked audiences. The film is already considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the greatest action films and a standout of the decade due to its impeccably crafted action scenes and its resonant political themes.

All these years later, after the last film’s solid box office performance, no sequels have come close to materializing. However, series director George Miller may finally have some good news for fans.

In an exclusive interview with IndieWire about the legacy of "Fury Road," the Aussie filmmaker commented on his plans for two sequels and talked about the legal troubles that have kept them from becoming a reality.

“There are two stories,” Miller said. “Both involving Mad Max, and also a Furiosa story. We’re still solving, we’ve got to play out the Warners thing, it seems to be pretty clear that it’s going to happen.”

Legal trouble has evidently been the major hold-up for the “Mad Max” series. In a lawsuit filed by Miller’s production company, Kennedy Miller Mitchell, the company alleges that Warner Bros. failed to pay out a $7 million bonus promised if “Fury Road” could be completed for less then $157 million. Warner claims that the film ran over this number, while KMM alleges that the studios’ calculations include costs incurred because of decisions beyond their control. Miller is now hopeful that the issue will be handled soon.

“The chaos has stabilized and it’s become extremely positive as the dust seems to have settled after [the AT&T merger],” Miller said.

Even after these issues are settled, Miller will first direct the generation-spanning romance “Three Thousand Years of Longing” with Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton. That film is planned to shoot early next year.
