A woman in India has been arrested for murdering her 3-month-old grandson by mutilating his genitals. The woman also injured the infant's twin sister, police said.

The 45-year-old woman, identified by her first name Shanti, was arrested Sunday after she absconded from Coimbatore, a city in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, following the murder.

The suspect reportedly suffered from mental illness, the family said. The woman who fled from the city after the incident on Oct. 21 was arrested from her native in Madurai, around 125 miles from Coimbatore, The Times of India reported.

According to the investigators, on the day of the incident, the infants' parents went out for errands after leaving the children with Shanti. When the victims' mother, identified as Aishwarya, got back home, she found her infant son unresponsive with multiple injuries and mutilated genitals lying on the bed. Aishwarya then searched for her daughter and found the 3-month-old girl injured inside the bathroom of the house. The girl had fractures on her hand, ABP Live reported.

Aishwarya rushed her children to a nearby hospital but the boy was pronounced dead. The infant girl is undergoing treatment for her injuries, police said.

Shanti had been staying with her daughter for the past few months. Meanwhile, neighbors said they were unaware of the woman's mental health condition.

The police received CCTV footage of Shanti leaving the house after the incident. Shanti was booked on charges of murder and an attempt to murder, police said.
