A woman from Niagara Falls, New York, was arrested and charged with animal cruelty Wednesday after she stabbed her boyfriend’s pet dog because she was “jealous of the” canine.

Police responded to a home after receiving a call from a man saying his girlfriend had stabbed his dog. Upon arrival, the officers found a mixed-hound dog bleeding heavily from its back and neck and a bloody knife lying beside it in one part of the home and "a larger pool of blood in the living room area." The responding officers then noticed 54-year-old Christina Leighton drinking beer and her “hands covered in blood.”

The dog, named Two Socks, was rushed to the Niagara Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals where it underwent an emergency surgery. Vets said the canine had sustained a three-inch cut on the neck. The animal remained in the care of Niagara SPCA as of Thursday and was expected to make a full recovery.

Meanwhile, the woman's unidentified boyfriend told police that “Leighton has become increasingly jealous because he has been spending more time with the dog than her."

Niagara Falls Animal Control Officer David Bower said, "Basically, in a nutshell, she was jealous of the dog because he was spending too much time with the dog. He was training the dog for hunting. She was jealous of the dog, and she kept telling him over and over that she hated the dog."

Leighton was arrested and taken to Niagara Falls Police headquarters, where she was booked. She was charged with one aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony, on Wednesday. She did not appear in court Thursday morning and a warrant was issued against her.
