The Netherlands edged out Mexico 2-1 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2014 World Cup. Mexico was up 1-0 thanks to a fantastic goal from Giovani dos Santos shortly after the start of the second half but Wesley Sneijder tied the game in the 88th minute. In the second minute of extra time, Arjen Robben was taken down inside the box by Mexico captain Rafa Marquez. A penalty shot was awarded and Schalke 04 striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar put the Dutch up for good.

Mexico's defeat was heartbreaking and El Tri were eliminated in the Round of 16 for the sixth consecutive World Cup. While Mexico was eliminated from the World Cup, the Dutch await the winner of Costa Rica vs. Greece. In the World Cup group stage, Mexico beat Cameroon 1-0 and Croatia 3-1 and tied host country Brazil to advance to the second round. Brazil also beat Cameroon and Croatia and were tied with Mexico for total number of points but was the winner of Group A due to goal differential.
