Ed Sheeran and Ukrainian band Antytila have released a new collaboration single aimed at helping Ukrainians affected by Russia's invasion of the country.

The single is a remix of Sheeran's 2021 hit track "2Step," the fifth single from his studio album "=" (equals). Antytila frontman Taras Topolia added new verses to the song that speak of the sentiments of the Ukrainians about the ongoing war. The track was released Monday on Youtube.

"I decided to explain in the lyrics how it was the first day of the war for me and for millions of Ukrainian people," Topolia told the Associated Press on Tuesday.

The singer-songwriter explained the hardships he and his band went through while filming the music video. Antytila, one of the biggest musical groups in Ukraine, took a break from music to join the military following the Russian invasion.

"We were doing our job. And like driving and between the positions of our battle in the Ukrainian army and just stopped on the road and took the GoPro camera and shot this video. It took maybe 10 or 15 minutes," Topolia said.

He said he wrote the lyrics while he was serving as medic in Borodyanka. The band shot the music video while on the frontline in Kharkiv. "We just stopped in the middle of the road and were singing there in the middle of nowhere," he told BBC.

"The sirens interrupted our sleep, grabbed in two suitcases everything that is in the past, then go!" the frontman sings in the remix.

In another part of the video, a family could be seen fleeing the war by car. The pop star said the snippet portrays the "painful and difficult situation" of Ukrainian children.

"Ukraine is not just only destruction and horrible war. Ukraine is also talented, talented people. And those kids that now have no possibility to dance, to sing, to increase their skills, to play in the playgrounds," he said.

Antytila went viral in March after they posted a video asking Sheeran to help them be included in the list of performers in a benefit concert for Ukraine held in Birmingham, the U.K. The band was not allowed to perform in the concert due to their military duties but Sheeran assured them he will check out their music.

Royalties from streams of the "2step" remix video will go to the nonprofit Music Saves UA for the next 12 months.
