A 3-year-old girl was mauled to death by a pack of five dogs while playing at a park in India’s national capital, New Delhi. Police said Tuesday that the girl, identified as Laxmi, was playing with her friends near her home when the dogs suddenly attacked her.

Laxmi's father, who works as a gardener at the park, heard "the snarls of dogs and children screaming" and rushed to check on Laxmi, only to find her bleeding profusely.

The girl was rushed to a local hospital where she was declared brought dead. The incident took place Friday but was reported by local media Tuesday.

"We received information from ABG Hospital at 2:45 p.m. that a girl child was brought dead to the hospital. The body was then shifted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital for an autopsy. The girl’s parents alleged she was badly injured after dogs attacked her inside a park," a police officer told Hindustan Times.

A case was registered and the statements of the parents have been recorded. The child's body was sent for post mortem and cops are awaiting the autopsy report.

The locals expressed outrage over the incident, with some alleging that a group of kids had pelted stones at the canines because of which they attacked Laxmi.

"While the older kids managed to escape, Laxmi could not sense the danger and was attacked by the dogs," another cop told The Times of India, adding, "Many people also claimed that dog bites are frequent in the locality. We are verifying such allegations."

While the officers refused to comment on the status of the dogs, the locals said the canines have not been caught as of Saturday.

Last month, a 6-year-old boy in New Mexico was killed by dogs at his grandparents’ home. The boy managed to get into the dogs’ enclosure that was kept in his grandparent's backyard. He was attacked and was left severely wounded on the upper body. The boy was airlifted to a local hospital where he succumbed to the injuries.
