More than 30 people were injured after two roller coaster trains collided head-on Thursday at an amusement park in southern Germany, according to local authorities.

The incident took place shortly before 2 p.m. local time at a Legoland park in Günzburg in Bavaria, an official statement issued by the authorities said. The train had 38 passengers on board when the crash took place.

The crash left at least 31 people injured, one of them severely, a local police spokesperson told ABC News.

Sixteen people had to be taken to a hospital, while the remaining 15 people were assessed at the site and allowed to go home, according to ABC News. At least 10 children and a teenager were among those injured.

The crash reportedly took place at the station of the Fire Dragon roller coaster ride. Legoland said it launched an investigation. The ride will remain closed in the meantime, according to Euronews.

Findings of an initial investigation suggested one train braked heavily, which caused another train coming from the opposite direction to crash into it.

However, the exact cause of the accident is yet to be determined.

Three rescue helicopters were deployed to the scene, as well as fire and rescue departments were called in for help following the incident.

Officials weren't able to rescue all the passengers from both the trains at the same time. Only after the passengers from one train were rescued the other train was brought to a position wherefrom its passengers could be evacuated, according to the statement.

The incident occurred two days after another roller coaster ride accident killed a 57-year-old woman at the Klotti Wildlife and Leisure park in Klotten in the country. The victim fell 26 feet to her death when the carriage was negotiating a curve Tuesday. The police were initially doubting foul play, but later determined no criminal conduct was involved in the death of the woman. The authorities didn't release the identity of the victim.
