KEY POINTS

  • Jimmy Garoppolo's injury is not serious as diagnosed,
  • Brock Purdy needs to hold up the quarterbacking duties
  • Garoppolo may return before the 2022 NFL season ends

The San Francisco 49ers may have caught a break following reports that Jimmy Garoppolo may not be required to undergo surgery for his foot.

The two-time Super Bowl champion was initially diagnosed with a fractured foot on Sunday, December 4, which led many to conclude that the 31-year-old player's NFL season was over.

However, it appears that Garoppolo did not suffer from a Lisfranc injury, meaning he will not be required to undergo surgery for it to heal, with Adam Schefter of ESPN reporting the development.

Better yet, there is reportedly a chance that the Illinois native could return for the Niners this season.

Hence, Garoppolo may be out for now, but he may possibly return in seven to eight weeks. But this is on the understanding his rehabilitation goes well.

In addition, there is the question of how far the 49ers will go. Based on the NFL schedule, the team would have to be in the NFC divisional round if he returns in seven weeks.

Should it be the eighth week, San Francisco would already be in the NFC Championship Game.

"That's why they're still trying to work through it," Shanahan said. "Some specialists have to finalize it, so we don't want to give you guys any false information. They're discussing all those things, but we're feeling like it's starting to get better than that, so we'll see when we get the official information."

Another factor in the mix is how well Brock Purdy will respond.

With no other choice, head coach Kyle Shanahan will pin their quarterbacking needs on the rookie.

The final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft has completed 25 of his 37 passes for 210 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception after relieving Garoppolo when the 49ers defeated the Miami Dolphins, 33-17.

It remains to be seen how long the 22-year-old can hold up.

But should Garoppolo return, there is no telling how effective he would be and if he would be a better option over Purdy.

Josh Johnson will be Purdy's backup for now.

There is an open roster spot, but the franchise does not appear to be inclined to fill it up with another play-caller, likely saving it for Garoppolo should he be fit to return.
