An 89-year-old Colorado woman died and her grandson was seriously injured after two pit bulls attacked them at their home.

The dogs mauled the unidentified elderly woman and her 12-year-old grandson at their home in Golden on Sept. 14. They sustained serious injuries and were rushed to a hospital. However, family members confirmed the elderly victim succumbed to injuries Sunday, Golden Police Department said in a news release Monday.

The child is recovering after he was released from the hospital.

Deputies arrived at the residence after the child managed to escape to a neighbor's house and called for help. They found the injured child at the neighbor's residence and blood stains leading to the victim's home. When the officers checked the backyard of the woman's house, they noticed two pit bulls viciously mauling her.

In an attempt to separate the dogs from the victim, the officers used tasers and less-lethal shotguns but failed. Eventually, with the help of additional force that arrived at the scene, the cops managed to rescue the woman.

Officials did not reveal further details about the incident but said the woman and her grandson knew the dogs.

One of the dogs also sustained injuries and was euthanized soon after the attack. The second pit bull was sent to a veterinary hospital and was euthanized after evaluation, CBS News reported.

Officials are investigating if the family had the license to keep the pit bulls and if the dogs were properly vaccinated.

In a similar case of a dog attack last month, a 61-year-old postal worker in Florida died after she was attacked by five dogs while delivering mail. The victim, identified as Pamela Jane Rock of Melrose, was mauled by the dogs after her vehicle broke down when she was on duty. Rock succumbed to injuries a day after she was hospitalized with the injuries. After the fatal incident, animal control officers took the dogs into custody and said they would be euthanized.
