A simple diaper change ended in tragedy Saturday afternoon in Alabama when a father accidentally shot himself and his young daughter.

The gun went off while the unidentified man was changing his daughter's diaper in the back seat of a vehicle parked outside a Chuck E. Cheese pizza restaurant in Vestavia Hills, a suburb of Birmingham.

The girl, whose age has not been reported, was shot in the leg and taken to Children’s of Alabama hospital, while the father was seriously injured by a bullet to the upper body, Vestavia Hills Fire Department Capt. Ryan Farrell told AL.com.

The girl "appears to be fine," while the man is in serious condition, Vestavia Hills police told WBRC, a Fox affiliate in Birmingham.

There has been no confirmation as to whether the man will be charged with a crime, though police reportedly believe it was an accidental shooting.

From 2005 to 2010, almost 3,800 people died in the U.S. from unintentional shootings, according to the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. More than 1,300 of those people were under the age of 25.
