WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD

Evan Peters and Emma Roberts are one of Hollywood’s hottest couples right now … on and off-screen. But on Wednesday, Jan. 29 their relationship on-screen as Kyle and Madison came to a shocking end during the season finale of “American Horror Story: Coven.”

For those that missed the jaw dropping season 3 finale, Zoe accidentally killed herself while performing one of the Seven Wonders, “transmutation.” Impaling herself on the Academy’s fence, the witches immediately tried to bring Zoe back with another Seven Wonder, “vitalum vitalis.” However Queenie was unsuccessful in performing the spell, and Madison flat out refused – choosing instead to bring a fly back to life.

With Zoe dead, Myrtle suggested that Cordelia throw her hat into the running for next Supreme. Cordelia was forced to go head-to-head with Madison and came out victorious when Madison couldn’t perform “divination.”

Upset about not being the next Supreme, Madison told Cordelia and Myrtle that she was leaving the Academy and telling the world about the Coven. Unfortunately Madison didn’t make it that far. While trying to pack, Madison was attacked by Kyle who was angry that she refused to bring Zoe back to life. Madison begged for her life, telling him that she loved him. However Kyle called out her bad acting chops and strangled her to death.

Many fans were shocked to see Evan Peters and Emma Roberts engaged in the violent act, and according to “American Horror Story” co-creator Ryan Murphy, it was something that they didn’t take lightly.

“I was worried about Evan having to strangle Emma, because they’re deeply, madly in love and dating [in real life], but they went for it and had a great time doing it,” Murphy explained to Entertainment Weekly of the scene between Kyle and Madison. “I think they both approached it in a very respectful way from the point of view of the characters. I like that whole Frankenstein ending. Season 1 and season 2, Evan died at the end, and in this one, he sort of lives on in an immortal way, and I like that we changed that.”

The on-screen altercation was also a shocker because of Peters and Roberts’ July 2013 fight at a Montreal hotel. Authorities were called and arrested Roberts after discovering Peters with a bloody nose and alleged bite mark. A rep for the actors released a statement following Roberts arrest, stating: “It was an unfortunate incident and misunderstanding. Ms. Roberts was released after questioning, and the couple are working together to move past it.”
