Andrew Garfield is bringing his theater talent to the movies in Netflix's upcoming adaptation of the stage musical “Tick, Tick…Boom”. The actor will be working with Lin-Manuel Miranda, who will be directing the film based on a script written by Steven Levenson.

Deadline reports that Garfield will portray the main protagonist who feels pressure from his career as a theatrical composer and his obligations to his girlfriend Susan. The character is based on the life of late composer Jonathan Larson.

The British actor is no stranger to stage adaptations as he was given a Tony Award nomination in 2012 for the play “Death of a Salesman” before winning in 2018 for his performance as Prior Walter in “Angels in America”.

According to Levenson, the film adaptation will have additional parts of Larson’s personal life that wasn’t covered in the show he originally penned. Levenson has been known for his work on the Tony-winning musical “Dear Evan Hansen”, which has been still running successfully on Broadway. Levenson has also worked on the television miniseries "Fosse/Verdon" for FX, which was nominated for an Emmy this year.

Interesting enough, Miranda played Jonathan in 2014 during Encores! Off-Center’s presentation of the musical. The “Hamilton” actor performed the musical alongside Leslie Odom Jr. and Karen Olivo. Miranda will be bringing this to the big screen with his adaptation, which will mark his feature directorial debut. This will be similar to his other semi-autobiographical work, “In The Heights”, which is also being made into a film being released in June 2020.

Larson is best known for creating the award-winning musical “Rent”, which was a big success on Broadway that was also turned into a movie released in 2005. Before his death, Larson was working on “Tick, Tick…Boom” as a solo piece in the 90s. After his sudden passing, his work was then turned into a three-person book musical in 2001.

“Tick, Tick…Boom!” will be produced by Miranda, Levenson, and Jonathan Larson’s sister Julie Larson. The film currently doesn’t have a release date.
