British-American actress Angela Lansbury, best known for her role in the long-running television series "Murder, She Wrote," passed away Tuesday at age 96, leaving behind a fortune worth tens of millions of dollars.

Lansbury was born in 1925 in Regent's Park in London, England, to Irish actress Moyna Macgill and British politician Edgar Lansbury.

She first gained acting work alongside her mother, earning $60 a week singing songs at nightclubs when she was just 16.

She made her film debut at 17 in the 1944 psychological thriller "Gaslight" with Ingrid Bergman.

Throughout her decades-long career, Lansbury starred in several films, including "National Velvet," "State of the Union," "The Court Jester," "The Reluctant Debutante," "The Manchurian Candidate," "Death on the Nile," "The Company of Wolves" and "Nanny McPhee."

She also appeared in television shows including "Studio 57," "Touched by an Angel" and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit."

In 1983, Lansbury began starring as Jessica Fletcher in the TV series "Murder, She Wrote." The series ran for 264 episodes over 12 seasons through 1996. It was the longest-running detective drama in television history at the time.

Aside from her TV and film work, she also appeared in several Broadway and West End productions, including the original production of "Mame," the acclaimed 1973 revival of "Gypsy," the award-winning 1979 revival of "The King and I," and the original Broadway production of "Sweeney Todd."

Throughout her career, Lansbury won several awards and honors including an Honorary Oscar, five Tony Awards, six Golden Globes and an Olivier Award.

Lansbury's first husband was the late actor Richard Cromwell, whom she married in 1945 when she was just 19. They divorced the following year, and Lansbury later discovered that her ex-husband was gay.

In 1949, she married her second husband, actor Peter Shaw. They had two children together. Shaw passed away in 2003.

During her lifetime, Lansbury amassed an impressive real estate portfolio. Her properties included an apartment in New York City, which she purchased in 2006 for $2 million.

She also owned a home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles.
