Industry sources have once again leaked information about Apple’s plans. Apparently, the Cupertino giant could be planning to launch a 6-inch OLED iPhone after this year’s iPhone 8. If true, this would be the first time that Apple is outfitting its iPhones with a screen that’s bigger than the 5.5-inch panels its current biggest smartphones are sporting.

On Thursday, The Investor learned that industry sources spoke with South Korean publication ET News about Apple’s plans. According to them, Samsung’s biggest rival has already started the development on a 6-inch iPhone as part of the company’s goal of introducing the largest iPhone yet in 2018. Aside from the size of its screen, what’s interesting here is Apple will be using the same OLED display technology that its upcoming iPhone 8 is rumored to come with.

The industry sources went into detail as to what Apple is really planning for next year. The tech giant is said to be coming up with two OLED iPhones for 2018. One of which will feature a 5.85-inch display, while another will boast a massive 6.46-inch screen. It’s important to note that the 5.85-inch model is going to be the same size as the upcoming iPhone 8.

Apple has reportedly communicated with Samsung Display, for the two of them to commence development work on the larger OLED panel. Of course, Apple has also tapped its other parts makers to start working earlier than usual. “The development schedule has been advanced considering diverse factors such as funding, facility investment and production plans,” one source said. “Work for this year’s iPhone started in April, also earlier than usual.”

Apple has obviously not confirmed these revelations, but sources maintain that Apple will most likely launch bigger handsets due to the growing consumer demand for smartphones with large screens. Considering its work on the iPhone 8, Apple could also be planning to fully embrace the full-screen design for its future iterations.

Speaking of the iPhone 8, Apple has already released invitations for a press event on Sept. 12. The company is believed to be unveiling its 10th anniversary handset and a slew of other products at the event, as per Apple Insider. According to the invite, the venue for the press event is the Steve Jobs Theater, which is loacted at Apple’s new Apple Park campus in Cupertino. The program is set to begin at 10 a.m. Pacific time. No other information is presented in the invitation except for the blurb, “Let’s meet at our place.”

Previous reports stated that Apple is launching three new iPhones this year: the flagship handset called the iPhone 8 and the yearly upgrades iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus. There’s also reason to believe that the Apple Watch Series 3, the fifth-generation Apple TV and the upgraded operating systems for all new devices will be launched at the Sept. 12 event. As opposed to its predecessors, the Apple Watch Series 3 is reportedly coming with LTE support. Meanwhile, the upgraded Apple TV is rumored to come with support for 4K and HDR.
