KEY POINTS

  • The Apple TV app will make its way to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
  • This will make it easier for PS4 and PS5 users to enjoy their favorite Apple TV content
  • Other streaming apps will also make their way to Sony's consoles

Sony has announced that the Apple TV app will be making its way to the upcoming PlayStation 5 gaming console, as well as the current PlayStation 4. This means PS4 owners and would-be PS5 owners who are also Apple TV users or Apple TV+ subscribers will be able to watch their favourite shows on their gaming machines itself.

In a blog, Sony said that the company has noted that many players use their PlayStation consoles for other purposes, not just gaming. For most users, the console also serves to provide entertainment in the form of movies, TV shows, gaming livestreams and music, the blog reads.

For the same reason, the tech giant said it will be bringing the Apple TV app, as well as other entertainment apps and services, to the PS4 and the PS5.

Here's what the Japanese multinational company's blogpost said of the Cupertino tech giant's app:

“Enjoy Apple TV+, Apple TV channels, new and popular movies, and personalized, curated recommendations on the Apple TV app. That means users can enjoy Apple Originals like Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet, Ted Lasso, and The Morning Show through Apple TV+, subscribe to premium channels, and buy or rent movies and TV shows and access past purchases from Apple.”

Apart from the Apple TV App, Sony said it will be adding Disney+, Netflix, Spotify, Twitch and YouTube to its consoles. The PS5 will also be home to other streaming apps such as Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, MyCanal, Peacock, and more.

Easy entertainment access

In the same blog, Sony explained that the PS5 will have a new Media space dedicated for these apps. With this new feature, users won't have to separately download the apps needed for each respective service. The Media space will also be located right beside the Game home screen, making it easier for users to switch between their game library and media content.

Sony also said that a new Media Remote will be included with every PS5 purchase. This remote has dedicated buttons for certain streaming services, making it even more user-friendly.
