A study reveals that Apple is winning more and more Android users, particularly in the European markets, with the iPhone 11 series of smartphones.

According to a recent study conducted by insights and consulting company Kantar, Apple was able to win a number of Android users with the iPhone 11 series. Android smartphone sales in five major European markets (France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy and Spain) in the third quarter of 2019 slowed down by 1.5 percent to a total of 80.9 percent market share.

Conversely, Apple iPhone sales in the same region at the same period of time, on the other hand, increased by 2 percent year-on-year to a total of 18.9 percent market share. This indicates that the iPhone 11 series of devices, particularly the lower-cost iPhone 11, was more attractive to European consumers compared to their Android counterparts.

“The new [iPhone] models are all selling well, with the more competitively priced iPhone 11 is leadingin absolute terms,” Dominic Sunnebo, global director for Kantar, said, adding, “but the Pro models are not far behind.”

Of the five European markets, Apple saw the most iPhone sales in Italy, Apple Insider noted. iPhones accounted for 13.8 percent of all smartphones sold during September this year, indicating a 3.6 percent year-on-year growth from last year's 10.2 percent. Android handsets saw a 3.5 percent decrease in market share at this time.

This is followed by France, where iPhones accounted for 18% of all smartphone sales in September this year. This indicates a 2.9 percent year-on-year increase compared to last year, as opposed to a 2.2 percent decrease in Android sales.

Apple saw the lowest increase in Great Britain. iPhone sales in the country increased by a mere 1.5 percent despite strong market penetration – Kantar's data reveals that iPhones comprised 34 percent of all smartphone sales in the region.

Other regions

Apple isn't seeing the same sales numbers in other regions. iPhone sales decreased by 2 percent year-on-year in the U.S. and by 1.3 percent in China. Conversely, more Android smartphones were sold in these regions, indicating a 1.8 percent and 1.6 percent year-on-year growth in sales.

Kantar noted that home grown Chinese smartphone brands accounted for a whopping 79.3 percent of sales in China in the third quarter of 2019. U.S. blacklisted Huawei and Honor make up a combined 46.8 percent of sales in the Asian country.

Cupertino, however, saw huge leaps in market share in Australia and Japan. iPhones accounted for 39.6 percent and 39.9 percent of all smartphone sales in these countries respectively, indicating a 4.1 percent and massive 10.3 percent growth from last year.
