“The Arrangement” star Lexa Doig explained why her character, Deann, had no choice but to team up with Terence (Michael Vartan) and kidnap Megan (Christine Evangelista) at the end of Season 1, episode 9.

In a recent interview with TVLine, Doig suggested that Deann’s involvement in the kidnapping is somewhat a reluctant one, noting that her character only agreed to Megan’s kidnapping because of the film producer’s strong desire to keep her “entire livelihood” from crumbling after the actress’ murderous past surfaced.

“I wouldn’t necessarily put her as being the mastermind behind that plan,” Doig told the news outlet. “But when there’s a mess that needs to be cleaned up regarding Kyle (Josh Henderson) — and Megan, as Kyle’s fiancée, is an extension of that — then Deann shoots right in there, getting her hands dirty.”

That is particularly true in a sneak peek from this week’s Season 1 finale, in which Deann boldly threatens Megan’s blackmailer, Colton (Jeremy Schuetze), in a restaurant. In the video, Terence tells Colton that he will be getting his 5 million dollars in installment: a hundred thousand dollars every 60 days. Deann is surprised that her husband is actually paying the extortionist because if it’s up to her, she’ll just have Colton killed.

“Jesus Christ, Terence!” an agitated Deann tells her husband. “This is not the way to handle this. Why don’t we just eliminate the problem? … Why are you clearly wasting your time?”

Terence tells Deann that he doesn’t want things to get messy, but the latter argues that it’s too late for that. Upset with how things are going down, Deann stands up from her seat and starts making her way out of the restaurant.

Scared for his life, Colton follows Deann and stops her from exiting the establishment. “This isn’t right … this isn’t the way it works,” Colton tells Deann.

“Stop talking,” Deann replies. “You don’t get to have to say any more. I have spent a lifetime building what I have and I’m not gonna let you or anyone else destroy it.”

When Colton tries to argue once again, Deann cuts him short and threatens him. “I will put you in the ground,” Deann tells the extortionist. “So here’s what going on: you are gonna take the hundred thousand dollars and go away. That is all you get, and do count your blessings because you’ve messed with forces larger than you can possibly comprehend. Our organization is everywhere. If we see you, if we heard one word from you, I promise you there will be nowhere for you to run.”

As revealed in Season 1, episode 9, Megan killed her stepbrother, Evan (Pavel Romano), for sleeping with her when they were younger, and Colton was the one who took the blame for the murder. After his stay in prison, Colton tracked Megan down and ultimately demanded $5 million from her. If he didn’t get the money, Colton told Megan that the public would know in no time that she’s a killer.

“The Arrangement” Season 1 finale, titled “The New Narrative,” airs on Sunday, May 7 at 10 p.m. EDT on E!, and according to Doig, events in the season ender are going to surprise viewers. “Buckle up, buttercup! It’s a pretty wild ride,” the actress said of episode 10. “You don’t know what to believe right up to the very, very end, and then suddenly you go, ‘Oh, my God!’”
