The “Arrow” Season 5 finale may have just killed everyone except Oliver. The CW drama ended the season by having Prometheus kill himself, setting off explosives throughout the island that all of Oliver’s friends were stuck on. Fans don’t know who survived, but at least one death is confirmed: Malcolm Merlyn.

When Merlyn died in the “Arrow” Season 5 finale, the explosion happened off screen. The focus was on his daughter Thea’s (Willa Holland) reaction to the events. However, actor John Barrowman promised that his character really is dead.

“I know they’ve done it off camera, but I’m here to tell you I won’t be back next season,” Barrowman told fans in a Facebook video.

Rumors were flying about the actor leaving the CW drama, so it wasn’t entirely surprising to see Malcolm step on a landmine that his daughter Thea (Willa Holland) had accidentally triggered. He sacrificed himself so his daughter could live.

Barrowman noted that he wasn’t happy about leaving, but he understands that this is just how the TV business works. “I am very sad to be leaving the Arrowverse. I love playing Malcolm Merlyn, and that’s it really,” he explained. “As sad as it may be, I understand how shows must change and also characters must change and develop, but that doesn’t mean I’m not very sad and upset about it.”

The “Doctor Who” alum is grateful for his five years in the Arrowverse, though. Though he started and ended on “Arrow,” the villain also got to be part of the Legion of Doom on “Legends of Tomorrow” and joined “The Flash” for the musical episode. “I wanted to let you know how wonderful it has been for the last five years to be part of the ‘Arrow’ universe and all the other shows connected to it,” Barrowman added. “‘Arrow’ and Malcolm Merlyn have changed my life over here in the States and opened many, many doors and granted me some wonderful opportunities.”

He added that one of his favorite parts of the gig was meeting fans. “I think that is probably the most important thing to me,” he said.

Though he isn’t on “Arrow” anymore, fans still have the chance to meet Barrowman. He’s a regular at fan conventions. He is scheduled to be at Heroes and Villains London in the last weekend of May and at Awesome Con in Washington, D.C. in June.

“Arrow” fans are worried about who else is dead. Prometheus (Josh Segarra) appears to be the only other confirmed death from the finale. It seems unlikely that he’d be able to survive a bullet to the head.

Fans will have to wait until the fall to figure out who else died in the finale. Nearly all of Oliver’s (Stephen Amell) loved ones are in danger. It’s only his son William (Jack Moore) who is safe with him on the boat.

Luckily, “Arrow” has already been renewed for Season 6. However, fans should remember to reset their DVRs if they want to see the cliffhanger resolved. The drama is moving to Thursdays at 9 p.m. EDT when it returns.
