KEY POINTS

  • Kieran Tierney's self-isolation will force him to miss Arsenal's game against Manchester City
  • Tierney feels frustrated and says he followed all protocols
  • Arsenal is unlikely to convince the Scottish Football Association to relax its ruling regarding Tierney's self-isolation

Football action is back, but the pandemic is still here. This means that while there are modified ways to get tournaments up and going, the threat is still in the air. Kieran Tierney is part of the Scotland team set to host Israel, but things got a bit complicated when one of his teammates, Stuart Armstrong of Southampton, tested positive for COVID-19.

Unfortunately, this meant bad news for Arsenal FC. With Tierney in isolation, the 23-year-old will miss its Oct. 17 match with Manchester City. The Gunners criticized the process, revealing in an official statement that they are seeking further clarification and details regarding Scotland's self-isolation ruling.

“Our medical team have confirmed that Kieran was socially distant at all times from the player who tested positive and has broken no rules regarding Covid-19 protocols. We are currently seeking further advice and clarification of the details,” Arsenal FC’s statement read.

Armstrong had tested positive for the coronavirus during a routine UEFA testing. The rest of the squad returned with negative results, but those who came in close contact with him were not in the clear.

Tierney and Ryan Christie were singled out as two players who came in contact with Armstrong, along with a physiotherapist and a masseur, The Guardian reported. Hence, Tierney and the rest will have to self-isolate for 14 days, the usual protocol in such cases.

However, Arsenal’s stand may not matter much. The Scottish Football Association understands where the Gunners are coming from but believes the Scottish government will overrule everything else.

Tierney was left disappointed by the development, saying he had followed protocol and made sure he was practicing social distancing from his teammates.

“I’m so disappointed and frustrated to be in this situation. I have adhered to all regulations and made sure I was socially distancing from my teammates in the hotel. I’ve also tested negative. I know Arsenal and the SFA are now in discussions with the Scottish authorities to gain a further understanding,” Tierney said.

Aside from Arsenal’s match with City, he, along with Armstrong and Christie, will be missing the Nations League games against Slovakia and the Czech Republic. This means Steve Clarke has a challenge ahead, with other players like Scott McKenna, Liam Palmer and Oliver Burke also out due to injuries.
