“Batwoman,” the latest addition to the Arrowverse, broke the internet when its trailer depicted Kate Kane, played by “Orange Is the New Black” actress Ruby Rose, as a lesbian. And now executive producer Caroline Dries has revealed that the upcoming series is going to feature some on-screen romance in the first season.

According to Dries, Kate, despite being in a complex relationship with Meagan Tandy’s character Sophie, will be dating around and the show will feature her colorful romantices.

“Yes, that is to me what’s important about this character is that she’s like Oliver Queen,” Caroline said. She poined out that Green Arrow dated left and right at the beginning of the show before he and Felicity settled down.

“We didn’t want to neuter Kate,” Dries continued. “’She’s in this complicated relationship with Sophie because it’s an intellectual past relationship but to me what makes part of her character is that she has girlfriends. She goes on dates.”

Dries explained that Kate’s girlfriends and romantic interests will play an integral part in her journey to becoming a superhero.

“They will add to Kate’s blossoming as Batwoman as she’s realizing it’s hard to juggle personal and superhero,” Dries said.

A big part of Kate’s identity, according to Caroline in a previous statement to ET, is her personal life. This will include what she does when she’s not Batwoman.

Dries pointed out that one of the things Kate is going to figure out early on in her journey is why there was no Mrs. Wayne. She stated that it was very hard to be the hero of Gotham and still have a love life. Kate’s personal life will have its due time on screen. She will be “trying to grapple with ‘How do I be Kate and also be Batwoman?’”

Meanwhile, there has been some negative responses toward the show’s decision to portray Batwoman as a lesbian character. But many fans have defended this on social media.

One Twitter user wrote, addressing the people who aren’t as supportive of Ruby Rose’s character, that people don’t know what it’s like to always see the gay characters neutered “in service of the [hetero] characters.” According to the user, this was a genuine concern for those who have often seen gay characters being denied of romantic relationships because it would make “the het audience uncomfortable.”

“Batwoman” is set to premiere on Oct. 6 at 8 p.m. on The CW.
