The Jelly Belly Candy Company is adding the first beer-flavored jelly bean to its line of alcohol-free, cocktail-inspired jelly beans.

The California company created the first non-alcoholic gourmet flavor in 1977 with the Mai Tai jelly bean. Other flavors, including Blackberry Brandy, Strawberry Daiquiri, Piña Colada, Margarita and Mojito, followed.

"Usually the factory has a sweet and fruity aroma, but when we’re making this flavor, it’s just like being in an ale house,” Jeff Brown, vice president of manufacturing for Jelly Belly said earlier this month.

Jelly Belly says customers have requested a beer-flavored bean for decades. The Draft Beer bean took three years to develop.

“The effervescent and crisp flavor is packed in a golden jelly bean with an iridescent finish,” Jelly Belly says to describe the Draft Beer jelly bean. The flavor is said to be clean with notes of wheat and a touch of sweetness, with a bread-like aroma.

Featured Jelly Belly recipes combine the Draft Beer bean with other beans like the Peach bean to make “Beer Sangria” and Lemon Lime beans and Tabasco beans to make Michelada.

“Anyone who enjoys a good, cold beer will enjoy Draft Beer Jelly Belly beans for the simple fact that it tastes just as you’d imagine,” Rob Swaigen, vice president of marketing for Jelly Belly, said.
