Tennessee -- Blue alert suspect, Samuel Quinton Edwards, was reportedly gunned down by the police in Kentucky on Tuesday night.

The 34-year-old had been accused of shooting and injuring Hendersonville police officer Cameron Ferrell the previous night, following which a manhunt was launched for Edwards.

The police said the officer was treated for non-critical injuries at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Shortly after the incident, Edwards abandoned his van near a Nashville neighborhood and fled the scene on foot. Footage from nearby home surveillance cameras revealed he was carrying two guns.

The alleged fugitive then stole a damaged white Chevy Silverado pickup truck, according to a WRKN report.

The truck was located early Tuesday morning in Millersville, leading to a major manhunt throughout the city.

Multiple agencies joined the hunt for Edwards, including Hendersonville police, Sumner County Sheriff's Department, as well as rescue bloodhounds.

The I-65 was shut down for hours after the manhunt moved to a tree line by the interstate as the bloodhounds followed Edwards' scent. The search was withdrawn after the dogs lost the scent Tuesday afternoon.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation believed Edwards was armed and very dangerous. A Blue Alert was launched for Edwards, while the hunt for him was ongoing, and TBI stated he was wanted for attempted criminal homicide and evading arrest.

The alert was sent out via Twitter, which triggered messages on Tennessee Department of Transportation signs. The cell phone alert went out around 4 pm, according to Tennessean.

Metro Nashville Police Department later sent out a tweet from their official handle informing citizens about Edwards's demise.

"BREAKING: Samuel Quinton Edwards has been involved in an exchange of gunfire with Kentucky State Police in Louisville. He is deceased," read the tweet.

Edwards faced more than a dozen charges in Putnam County for his involvement in a previous shooting incident from earlier in June. He was released after posting a $79,800 bond on June 21.

Records show he and Erica Lynn, 31, were accused of a shooting on Interstate 40 in Cookeville. They were caught after motorists informed authorities shots were being fired from a blue Chevy Suburban into another vehicle on I-40 west.

Edwards had managed to flee the scene on foot, but was quickly detained. He and Lynn received several felony gun and drug charges after police found handguns and meth in their possession.
