The Christian holiday Candlemas, or Día de La Candelaria, which is annually celebrated 40 days after Christmas, falls on Wednesday this year.

This ancient festival, marked annually on Feb. 2, denotes the midpoint of winter, halfway between the winter solstice and spring equinox, according to RedLands Daily Facts.

Candlemas Day is also known as "Presentation of Christ in the Temple" and "Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary." The name “Candlemas” came from the ritual where Christians would bring their candles to the church to be blessed.

Various traditions developed about Candlemas, including the following:

  • People believed Candlemas predicted the weather for the rest of the winter
  • It is traditional to eat crepes (thin pancakes) on Candlemas in some parts of Europe, such as France
  • In Mexico, meanwhile, tamales are eaten on Candlemas, or, as it is known there, Día de Candelaria, during big celebrations with family and friends
  • One tradition is that whoever found the baby figure inside the Rosca de Reyes (Kings Cake) on Epiphany is obliged to bring food to the Candelaria gathering on Feb. 2
