Catholic Church Demands Apology From SNL After Pete Davidson Joke

The past six months have been eventful for "Saturday Night Live" cast member Pete Davidson. From the coverage of his relationship and breakup with pop singer Ariana Grande to comments mocking a veteran running for Congress to an Instagram post that suggested he is suicidal, the 25-year-old has made headlines in the New York Times and PerezHilton.com.

Davidson on Saturday drew more attention for comments deemed offensive by the Roman Catholic Church.

During a "Saturday Night Live" Weekend Update segment, Davidson discussed the similarities between singer R. Kelly’s sexual abuse case and the Catholic Church’s history of sexual abuse scandals.

"If you support the Catholic Church, isn’t that like the same thing as being an R. Kelly fan? I don’t really see the difference, except for one’s music is significantly better," Davidson said.

In a statement Monday, the Diocese of Brooklyn demanded "an immediate public apology from 'Saturday Night Live' and NBC after Saturday night’s disgraceful and offensive skit."

The statement also said that "the clergy sex abuse crisis is shameful, and no one should ever get a laugh at the expense of the victims who have suffered irreparably."

An Australian jury in December convicted Cardinal George Pell, 77, of sexually abusing two 13-year-old choirboys in the 1990s. Kelly, 52, was indicted in February on 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse involving underage girls.
