One of the biggest breaks in Chris Evans’ career is his titular role in “Captain America.” However, the actor hinted that he might be hanging up his shield and stepping down from playing the star-spangled superhero soon.

In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres to be aired on Monday, April 3, the host asked the “Gifted” star about his two upcoming “Avengers” films and whether this will be his last time playing the role of Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America.

Evans confirmed that he will retire from playing the superhero following the upcoming installments. “It is. My contract is up,” Evans told DeGeneres. “I have ‘Avengers’ three and four. We do ‘Avengers 3’ now, four is the latter part of the year and after that, that is the end of my contract.”

Prior to Evans confirmation, there were rumors circulating that the star-spangled superhero will die in one of the two upcoming Marvel movies. In “Captain America: Civil War,” it was speculated that Steve Rogers will meet his demise and his best friend Bucky Barnes would take over as Captain America, if the film would follow the original comic book storyline, as per Screen Rant.

At a Marvel event in Hollywood, “Captain America” co-directors Anthony and Joel Russo, along with MCU head Kevin Feige, discussed their decision to keep Captain America alive in “Civil War.” According to Anthony, they did not talk about killing Evans’ character in the film. However, Joel refuted this, explaining that they may have discussed about it once, but only because they talked about everything. Anthony agreed that they did talk about it, but the idea of killing off Captain America “never made its way into a realistic outline,” HitFix reported.

The Russo brothers and Feige agreed that they wanted to focus on the “Avengers” team fallout in the film, rather than highlight someone’s death. They added that Jim Rhodes/War Machine’s fate in the film was enough of a downer for the audience without adding a major character death.

“Well, the ending was always more about fracturing the team completely before getting into Infinity War,” Feige explained when asked why no Avenger died in the “Civil War.”

“Avengers: Infinity War” parts 1 and 2 are expected to retire mainstays like Captain America, Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). Meanwhile, Marvel has already started to introduce new superheroes who will be given more focus in the MCU such as Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and Captain Marvel.
