More stories will be told in “The Christmas Chronicles” as it’s been announced that Netflix is set to make a sequel. Titled “The Christmas Chronicles 2,” the movie will feature the return of Kurt Russell as Santa Claus.

Entertainment Weekly revealed a first look at the new film, featuring Russell and Goldie Hawn as Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Since Hawn appeared towards the end of the first movie, it appears we may get to see more of her chemistry with her off-screen partner Russell based on how cozy the two are in the first image from the new movie. Netflix also shared the news on its Twitter page on Friday, confirming the sequel.

Also returning from the original cast are Darby Camp, Judah Lewis, and Kimberly Williams-Paisley, who all play members of the Pierce family. Joining the cast is New Zealand actor Julian Dennison, who will portray a mythical creature known as Belsnickel. Another addition to the roster is Jahzir Bruno, who’s playing the role of Jack.

The new installment will find Christmas being threatened by Belsnickel as Santa and a teenaged Kate (Camp) try to stop him to save the holidays yet again. Directing the film will be Chris Columbus, who previously acted as a producer for the first movie. Columbus also wrote the script along with Matt Lieberman.

Clay Kaytis directed the first movie, which was released in November 2018. The film followed the Pierce siblings as they try to save Christmas after they discover Santa exists and accidentally break his sleigh.

The film garnered praise for Russell’s portrayal as St. Nick despite the mixed reviews for the movie's campy style and effects. The film managed to hit 20 million streams during its first week on Netflix, which is probably more of a reason for the streaming platform to make a sequel.

Don’t expect to see the sequel this holiday season as “The Christmas Chronicles 2” is in production for a planned 2020 holiday release.
