A criminal investigation is underway after a coronavirus patient attacked a nurse after refusing to cooperate with the treatment procedures. The incident took place in Guangzhou, China, on Wednesday.

According to local reports, the patient, identified as 47-year-old Okonkwonwoye Chika Patrick from Nigeria, entered the city on March 20. He was admitted to the hospital three days later after he tested positive for COVID-19.

On Wednesday, the unidentified nurse, who was attending to him, informed Patrick that a blood test needed to be conducted. He, however, refused to cooperate and started walking out of the isolation ward. When the nurse attempted to stop him, the man attacked her. He beat her and bit her face. The nurse sustained minor injuries to her face, neck and wrist.

Following the incident, the hospital increased security in the isolation ward. A criminal case was opened and the accused was undergoing treatment under the supervision of the police. Once the treatment is over, the accused will be punished according to the Criminal Law, laws and regulations of the Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases Law and the Exit and Entry Administration Law.

In a similar incident at a hospital in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad on Wednesday, a doctor was assaulted by the family members of a coronavirus patient who died. According to local reports, four members of a family were admitted to the hospital’s isolation ward after testing positive for the deadly virus. On Wednesday evening, one of them died following which two other members of the family attacked a doctor. A case was registered against the family members for misbehaving with the staff.

In another incident in the Indian city of Indore, two doctors were injured after they were attacked by a mob while they were trying to trace the contact of a patient infected with the deadly virus. The attack took place when a team of five people was searching for the contact. After the video of the incident went viral on social media, four people were arrested. Meanwhile, the two doctors suffered injuries to their legs.
