KEY POINTS

  • An active-duty airman and the dependent of a service member were tested positive
  • Public health officials have begun the “tracing process”
  • Inadequacy of essentials is making it hard for around 800 Grand Princess cruise ship passengers, who are now quarantined at Travis.

Travis Air Force Base, located in Northern California, confirmed Sunday that two people have tested positive for coronavirus at the base.

An active-duty airman and the dependent of a service member were tested positive. Both individuals are quarantined in their residences off-base.

Public health officials have begun the “tracing process” to identify if anyone has come in contact with the infected persons. More details about the two infected individuals are not released by Travis AFB to maintain privacy.

The Air Force base tweeted Sunday evening, “Military health professionals are conducting a thorough contact investigation to determine whether any other person may have been in close contact and possibly exposed."

Hundreds of passengers of the Grand Princess cruise ship were currently quarantined at the base after 22 people from the ship tested positive for the virus.

Meanwhile, Congressman John Garamendi on Saturday sent a letter to President Donald Trump, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other federal officials raising concerns about the virus quarantine protocol followed at the base. Calling it a "haphazard quarantine," he said very little regard was given for isolation, especially at mealtimes. He added that the inadequacy of essentials is making it hard for around 800 Grand Princess cruise ship passengers quarantined at Travis.

“I’ve received troubling images of long lines without social distancing for communal meals and beverages. I’ve also heard that there are inadequate hand-washing and surface cleaning materials on-site. From what I have been told, the only hand-washing available to individuals is a bar of soap in their rooms,” Garamendi said in his letter.

There are at least 3,774 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in the United States while deaths jumped to 69.
