The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recall for the 10-foot SunVilla Solar LED Market Umbrella, exclusively sold at Costco, after some consumers reported fire and burn issues due to the lithium-ion batteries.

The agency issued the recall after receiving six reports in which the lithium-ion batteries that power the umbrellas overheated.

In three of the cases, the solar panels caught fire while charging indoors on the AC adapter. There were also two cases in which the umbrella caught fire and one report of a smoke inhalation injury.

The recalled products were sold from December 2020 through May 2022 at Costco warehouses nationwide and online. The products were typically sold for $130 to $160.

Consumers who are in possession of the recalled umbrellas should immediately stop using the product. Customers are advised to remove the solar panel puck that contains the lithium-ion battery from the top of the umbrella.

The puck should be stored out of the sun and away from combustible material. Consumers should also refrain from using the AC adaptor to charge the battery pack.

Although Costco and SunVilla have been contacting all known purchasers, customers can get a full refund by returning the umbrellas and solar puck to any Costco Warehouse nationwide.

Those who are unable to go in-store to return the product can contact the company to receive a full refund.

The Canadian government has also issued a recall for almost 33,000 of the SunVilla umbrellas. In Canada, the product was sold between January 2021 and May 2022.

The umbrellas were sold in a variety of colors with LED lights inside the arms of the umbrella. The solar panel cover has “YEEZE” or “YEEZE 1” displayed near the top of the cover.

As of June 9, 2022, the company received one report of an umbrella catching fire from the battery overheating in Canada. No injuries have been reported.
