Staying at home during lockdown offers a host of health benefits, but in the case of a French father and his two kids, they came in the form of invaluable gold bars, according to reports. They found two gold bars wrapped in old bedsheets that they were supposed to use in building a fort. The family has been making things to amuse themselves at home during the lockdown period. An auctioneer confirmed the objects were gold and estimated their worth at €80,000 each.

A Regular Play Day

According to a BBC report, the family who lived in Paris left the city in March during the height of the pandemic in Europe. They decided to spend the lockdown period in their family home at Vendôme, a city southwest of Paris. The kids, who are both around 10 years old, decided to do different activities daily to amuse themselves during the lockdown.

In an interview with the French news network BFM TV, the kids said they asked their parents one day to help them build a fort. Their father told them to look for materials they could use in building their fort. He suggested they could use some old bedsheets, which he earlier saw lying in one section of the house. The children reportedly found the bed sheets, and when they lifted the linens, two heavy objects fell out.

They left the items at that time because they did not know what they were but went on to tell their father about it. When their dad retrieved the objects, he initially thought they were antique knife holders that belonged to the family’s grandmother. Along with the items, however, is a receipt stating that the items were gold.

Valuable Items

The father contacted auctioneer Philippe Rouillac to see if the items were really gold. The auctioneer confirmed that the two items are pure gold bars. Each of the bars weighs 2.2 pounds or 1 kilogram. Rouillac told the French news network that the family’s grandmother purchased the bars in 1967, as shown by the proof of purchase receipt.

At present, the gold bars are listed on the website of Rouillac with an estimated value of €80,000 each. According to CNBC, the two gold bars are worth more than $100,000 at the current exchange rates.
