  • The rear glass issue often requires a handset replacement
  • Devices free from hardware defects qualify for the new repair service
  • With the new service, Apple aims to reduce its carbon footprint

A month after allowing rear glass replacement for iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini without the need for handset replacement, Apple has extended its innovative repair technique, to two more of its flagship devices -- iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

It was just in February that reports said the tech giant was implementing a novel fixing-up method for cracked iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini. The technique, which allows Apple-authorized service providers to access the iPhone Rear System, allowed users to have their devices repaired without the need to replace their whole handset, MacRumors reported.

Normally, repairs involve an Apple technician inspecting a cracked iPhone thoroughly and deciding whether to replace a specific part, or the entire handset. Oftentimes, a rear glass issue requires a whole unit replacement. This includes the rear camera module, logic board, the original customer display and more.

A memo released by the Cupertino-based company says that all Apple stores, as well as Apple-authorized service providers, will have access to the iPhone Rear System part. The unit-repair method, which was available only for iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini, can now be used in iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max.

With the iPhone Rear System part, Pro holders can now enjoy the service granted to iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini users should their rear glass panels broke, WCCFTech reported.

The same unit-repair is not only available for iPhone 12 models with cracked rear glass. The method extends to iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, Pro and Pro Max, experiencing issues with the Face ID system, logic board and device enclosure.

However, in order to qualify for the same unit repair, and retain the user’s original display and rear camera, there are certain conditions to consider. The iPhone’s rear camera and original display must be free from hardware defects. If the said parts are found with issues or problems, the owner will be charged for the damages, Tech Times reported.

According to the memo, the iPhone Rear System part is a part of Apple’s commitment to preserving the environment with every product it releases. With the new repair method, the tech giant aims to reduce the carbon footprint of each iPhone it sells.

As per the latest update, the iPhone 12 Rear System part is available in all regions and countries where iPhone 12 is officially sold.
