Last week, Ronaldo shared the first photo of his newborn babies. In the heartwarming snapshot, the Portuguese soccer player cradles the sleeping twins in his arms as he looks at them fondly. “So happy to be able to hold the two new loves of my life,” he captioned the Instagram photo.

Ronaldo’s children were reportedly born in the United States on June 8 via a surrogate mother, according to Portuguese outlet SIC TV (via CNN). The twins, a boy and a girl, were reportedly named Mateo Eva. However, the soccer superstar has yet to confirm the names of his second and third children.

Last week, Ronaldo announced via Facebook that he has been given permission to return home from the FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia, where he was captaining the Portugal team, to spend time with his children. Prior to his statement, his team had been eliminated from the finals after being defeated by Chile. He will be skipping Portugal’s third-place match against either Germany or Mexico.

“I was in the service of the National Team, as it always happens, body and soul, even though I knew my two children were born,” he wrote in the statement (via CNN). “Unfortunately, we have not been able to achieve the main sporting objective we wanted, but I am sure we will continue to give the Portuguese joy. The president of the Portuguese Football Federation and the manager had an attitude today that sensitized me and I will not forget. I am very happy to finally be able to be with my children for the first time.”

The organization also released a statement following Ronaldo’s announcement. “The president of the FPF and the National Team were informed before the Confederations Cup by the National Team captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, that he had been a father,” the organization said. “The athlete, despite the birth of his children, made a point of being in the service of the National Team, in a gesture that we must underline and praise.”

The birth of his twins comes a month after rumors swirled that his girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez, 22, was five months pregnant. The rumor apparently stemmed from a photo he shared on social media in June of him affectionately holding his girlfriend’s stomach.
