A cobra was caught on camera attacking a snake catcher and sinking its fangs into the man’s mouth when he tried to give the reptile a kiss. The incident took place in the southern Indian state of Karnataka.

The snake catcher, identified as Sonu, responded to the scene on Dec. 24, after receiving information that a cobra was spotted by the residents.

Video of the rescue, uploaded to social media Wednesday, showed the snake catcher, who appeared drunk, trying to give the venomous reptile a peck. The cobra attacked the man and struck his face. Despite bleeding from his face, Sonu managed to catch the four-foot-long reptile.

Soon after the rescue, the man was rushed to a nearby hospital by local residents. He was immediately administered anti-venom. He was in “excruciating pain” for several days and had swelling around his mouth.

Doctors said a deadly dose of venom was injected into the snake catcher’s lips by the reptile. Thanks to timely treatment, the man survived and was recovering from the snake bite.
