Democrat Jaime Harrison Raises Record Amount In South Carolina Senate Race Against Trump Ally Lindsey Graham

Democratic Senate candidate Jaime Harrison brought in nearly $14 million in the second quarter of the year in his bid to unseat Trump ally Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., breaking a South Carolina record for the most money brought in by a political campaign in a single three-month period.

The Harrison campaign said Tuesday that it pulled in more than $13.9 million between March and June, nearly doubling the $7.4 million haul he received in the first three months of the year.

“Our campaign's record-breaking fundraising reflects the grassroots energy behind Jaime's movement, and will allow this campaign to make the investments necessary to send Lindsey home for good,” said Guy King, a spokesperson for Harrison’s campaign.

Graham has not yet released his fundraising numbers for the second quarter, but his campaign likely has more cash on hand than Harrison. During the first quarter of this year, Graham raised $5.6 million in total.

Harrison, 44, is currently the associate chair and senior counselor for the Democratic National Committee. From 2013 to 2017, he served as the chair of the Democratic Party of South Carolina. He has emphasized his working-class roots and criticized Graham for being a Washington insider.

Graham, 64, has served as a Senator from South Carolina since 2003 and is known for his hawkish foreign policy views. He voted in favor of the war in Iraq and is also an ardent supporter of Israel.

Graham has become a stronger supporter of President Trump, despite Trump's lagging approval ratings. According to FiveThirtyEight.com, Graham has voted with Trump 87.1% of the time. He also criticized the sexual assault investigation into Trump-appointed Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh in 2018, calling it an “unethical sham” by Democrats.

A poll by Civiqs in May showed Harrison and Graham tied at 42% support. The Cook Political Report has rated the South Carolina Senate seat as “Likely Republican.”
