A dentist has been arrested for allegedly raping a female patient during a procedure to remove her tooth. The victim alleged that the doctor drugged her during the process, leaving her defenseless.

The incident took place in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Oct. 16, reported NDTV. The victim, a 32-year-old woman from the Bareilly district, was experiencing a severe toothache, so she approached the dental clinic where the suspect, identified Dr. Ravendra, was practicing.

According to the victim, the dentist checked her, after which she was told her tooth could no longer be saved and she would need to undergo a procedure to extract it.

Though she left for home afterward, the dentist called her back to the clinic after a few hours. Upon arrival, the woman noticed the clinic was empty and its curtains were drawn. Despite her observations, she trusted the dentist. He then gave her an injection, which reportedly left her unconscious.

Based on the complaint, the woman found her clothes in disarray when she woke up a few hours later. She understood she was violated and questioned the dentist about what happened. It was then that the dentist revealed that he recorded the rape and said he would circulate it on social media if she told anyone about the abuse. He also threatened to kill her, the woman alleged as per Deccan Herald.

The woman kept quiet for days, but her family noticed that she was extremely distressed. They ended up questioning her, after which she finally opened up to her husband about the assault. The couple decided to approach the police and file a complaint against the dentist on Nov. 3.

Police said the woman was subjected to a medical examination, which proved she was drugged and raped. An investigation was then launched.

The dentist was taken into custody Sunday.

In June, a Los Angeles dentist was accused of sexually abusing nine female patients over the course of several years. The dentist, identified as 50-year-old Emad Fathy Moawad, reportedly preyed on women from immigrant and low-income communities. One of the patients who came forward claimed Moawad "sexually battered, molested and assaulted" her in 2017 after she was given anesthesia. She also said the staff at the clinic heard her yell at the dentist and accuse him of sexual assault. Moawad faced multiple charges, including nine counts of sexual battery by restraint, and was sent to jail on nearly $2 million bail.
