March 5 marks the beginning of “Season of the Drifter” and “Joker’s Wild” in “Destiny 2.” And like the lead up to the start of last season and “Black Armory,” Bungie has dropped a ViDoc walking dedicated guardians through some of the changes, additions, surprises, and maybe a couple of things you missed.

Here are four of the biggest takeaways from the new ViDoc:

1. Gambit Prime and The Reckoning

The backbone of the new content coming in “Joker’s Wild” will be the two new modes coming to the game. Gambit Prime is going to bring more of a competitive edge to the PvPvE mode The Drifter brought to the tower. The new gear will lean more into players filling certain roles, like ad-clearing or invading, while motes can get siphoned off by the other team. Prime will only go for one round as opposed to three in normal Gambit.

The Reckoning is the new endgame mode for the dedicated PvE players. Players will be transported to the Plains of the Nine in a race against the clock while being swarmed by enemies. As players go through, new levels will be unlocked as players traverse deeper into the mode.

2. More content available out of the gate

One of the common complaints with “Black Armory” was the way content was part and parceled out over the season in an attempt to keep players coming back. The poster child for this was the forges opening up over several weeks instead of following a standard quest line. That looks to be changing with “Joker’s Wild,” which will offer plenty of content across the first two weeks. Gambit Prime is available immediately and The Reckoning opens after completing one match in Prime. A new Gambit map releases right at the start with a second a week later. And a new exotic quest is available for Annual Pass owners the second week. Speaking of which...

3. Thorn is back

Since “Forsaken” released in September 2018, there has been a background story playing out involving The Drifter, Shin Malphur, and the Shadows of Yor, rewarding players with exotic weapons along the way. First was Malfeasance, then was the return of the Last Word in “Black Armory.” “Joker’s Wild” will continue that with the return of Thorn. The quest steps are still a mystery but expect plenty of lore.

4. Bungie pushing deep lore this season

From the beginning of the ViDoc, Bungie makes it clear that it’s taking another deep dive with the lore this season. A perfect example of this in the ViDoc is the interaction between The Drifter and the Emissary of the Nine, who refers to the Drifter as Dredgen. This hints at his past with the Shadows of Yor that has been played within the lore for months. There’s also the fact that the Reckoning will be taking place within the ice ball Drifter’s ship has been towing since he arrived, further connecting him with the enigmatic Nine.

That’s just the tip of what to expect from the new season and DLC. Bungie also teased what lies ahead with the new spring event “The Revelry,” the season after titled “Season of Opulence” and beyond. But for now, let’s enjoy what’s to come with “Season of the Drifter” and “Joker’s Wild.”
