Nobody puts Baby in the corner, and ABC is making sure both she and everyone else made famous from the iconic “Dirty Dancing” are getting their chance in the spotlight again with a brand new TV movie re-make.

ABC will debut a new “Dirty Dancing” reboot May 24 at 8 p.m. EDT, and though the original 1987 film isn’t the last time the story was tackled (a quasi-sequel, “Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights” was released in 2004), this new version will be the first look back at Baby (originally portrayed by Jennifer Gray) and Johnny’s (originally portrayed by Patrick Swayze) epic love story.

The original movie was set in the summer of 1963, and saw Frances “Baby” Houseman and her family vacationing at a wealthy upstate New York resort, where she meets dance instructor Johnny Castle. After his usual dance partner, Penny, winds up pregnant and in need of an abortion, Baby steps up with not only the funds to help her, but also as Johnny’s new dance partner. As the two practice together, they begin to fall in love, but their relationship is threatened when Baby’s father realizes what she used his money for, and mistakenly believes that Johnny is the father of Penny’s baby. Among other things, Baby is told she can never see Johnny again, but at the end-of-the-summer talent show, she and Johnny decide to throw the objections to their love story away and dance together one final time.

The remake is set to generally follow that same story, though in an interview with E! News, some of the cast members teased that the new take would also add something to the original story, which ended with the special dance. This time around, fans will also see an update to see what happened with Baby and Johnny (portrayed by Abigail Breslin and Cole Prattes in this version) a few years later.

“The thing that was exciting to me was you find out what happens to Baby and Johnny years later,” Debra Messing, who portrays Baby’s mom Marjorie, said.

“It lifts the lid on all kinds of questions you might had had about the original when you first watched it,” Bruce Greenwood, who portrays Baby's father, Jake, added.

Though the remake’s cast have expressed excitement over taking on the iconic roles that were made famous by the original film’s cast, the movie almost wound up not getting made at all. An original plan for the remake was announced by Lionsgate in 2011, with the original film’s choreographer, Kenny Ortega, set to direct, though those plans were later shelved in 2012. ABC later picked it up for the TV reboot after NBC started seeing massive success with Live Musical events. Though NBC has staged four successful musicals and Fox has also gotten into the game with a successful staging of “Grease: Live!” earlier this year, ABC will first be entering the game of airing new versions of classic musicals with “Dirty Dancing,” and will officially enter the arena of airing a live musical with a special presentation of “The Little Mermaid: Live” later this year.
