KEY POINTS

  • Disney will release some of its movies directly on its streaming platform
  • Bob Iger made the announcement in a recent interview
  • Most of the films will still be released in theaters

The lockdown because of coronavirus has stopped production of movies and it has also resulted in the companies pushing the release dates of some of films. The move is expected to have a domino effect on the other films that were supposed to be released later this year and early next year. Disney appears to be trying to avoid that situation by sending some of its projects directly to its streaming platform.

The social distancing measures that are in place have forced theaters to close down and wait for the pandemic to end. However, the situation has also led to opportunities for companies to expand their digital portfolio because people are now spending more time at home and consequently there is a huge demand to engage the bored populace with entertaining content.

Some of the companies are already adapting to the situation by releasing movies on Digital and DVD a little early. Disney appears to be going a step further by planning to release some of its upcoming films directly on its streaming platform.

Some of the movies that have been delayed because of the coronavirus lockdown may be released directly on Disney+. In an interview with Barron’s, executive chairman of Disney Bob Iger said that a few more movies may be released directly on the company’s streaming platform just like “Artemis Fowl.”

Disney had previously announced changes in release dates for some of its major films like “Mulan” and the upcoming Marvel flicks. Iger has confirmed that most of these films will still be released in theaters, but they will have to wait for appropriate slots.

“Mulan,” for example, was supposed to be released on March 27. The fans will now be able to watch it in theaters on July 24, The Wrap reported.

Apart from the movies, some of the big music events have also been postponed, Entertainment Weekly reported. It remains to be seen how soon the pandemic ends and which movies Disney will be releasing directly on its streaming platform.
