A mother dog and nine puppies were found abandoned in a sealed box at a garbage dump in Canada on Wednesday.

In a statement Monday, the British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA), said it was looking for the owner of the dog, a border collie-husky mix, that was found by a good Samaritan in a sealed box along with its puppies. The dogs were rescued by SCPA and kept in a shelter after they were taken to a vet.

“There is no excuse for simply walking away from a pet and leaving them to die. Abandoning animals is against the law and individuals can be prosecuted for their crime,” SPCA spokesperson Lorie Chortyk said.

The mother dog, named Casey by the shelter staff, was believed to be about a year old, while her puppies, five male and four females, were believed to be about a week old. The puppies will be up for adoption when they are around seven weeks old.

“Casey is a bit thin and focusing on caring for her babies. Staff say she’s a timid but sweet dog,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, SPCA was asking for donations of puppy pads and small collars for the dog and her puppies.

"There is help available for pet guardians who are struggling to care for their animals. They can reach out to a local rescue or the SPCA instead of abandoning them,” Chortyk said, adding that anyone interested to adopt or donate can contact the branch.

The incident comes a few days after two dogs were found abandoned in a trash bag in McCracken County, Kentucky. The puppies were starved, tails were cut back and their ears were cropped. Calling it the worst case of mistreatment of puppies, McCracken County Humane Society Executive Director Terry Vannerson said, “The way they’re acting, they’ve been abused. Puppies don’t act like this.”
