A dog owner in the United Kingdom, who was caught on camera repeatedly punching his pet during a training session, was banned from keeping animals for five years Thursday.

The investigation into the case began in June this year after the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) obtained a video footage showing a man repeatedly punching and shouting at his pet dog, a Staffordshire bull terrier, as it sits on a chair inside a home.

Inspector Danni Jennings arrived at the property and found the man in the video as well as the canine there. The man was later identified as 36-year-old Kieran Huelin of Bolton, Greater Manchester. The accused handed over the dog, named Rosie, to RSPCA while an investigation took place.

“Dog owners should always make sure their pets are handled properly and not stressed or endangered with any aggressive or anti-social behavior. Training should always be reward-based and should not include physical punishment as this may cause pain, suffering and distress. Rosie is a lovely and bouncy dog in real life but on this footage she is quite the opposite,” Jennings told a U.K. court Thursday.

The accused was found guilty of the crime and the judge banned him from keeping pets for five years. Huelin was also given a 12-month community order and asked to pay $1,000 costs and a $100 victim surcharge.
