A pet dog was shot in the face as it tried to protect its family from thugs. The incident took place in Cape Town, capital of South Africa, earlier this month.

Speaking to local daily News 24 on Saturday, Derrick Mfengwana, the dog’s owner, said the canine saved his sister’s boyfriend’s life by leaping and attacking the three criminals who had pulled out a gun on the man at their home.

Recalling the incident, Mfengwana said, the man drove up to the gate when the thugs approached him with guns.

"The dog was inside the yard and went for one of the men. I was watching a movie inside and heard the gunshot. I heard my girlfriend and sister screaming and thought they had shot her boyfriend because I saw blood around the house,” he said.

The dog then attacked one of the thugs who shot the canine in the face. However, the dog continued to fight the men till the victim was able to escape safely.

“When we went outside, I saw my dog was bleeding. He was still standing and running around," Mfengwana said.

The thugs too ran away and the family rushed the dogs to a nearby animal hospital. Vets said the dog’s jaw and tongue were damaged by the bullet. However, they said the canine was recovering and was responding to the treatment.

Mfengwana said the dog remained in the care of the vets. He said he was excited to the canine back home.

"These criminals have done a lot of damage and we feel unsafe," he said, adding that he hopes the criminals are arrested at the earliest.

Meanwhile, police confirmed that they were investigation the case, however, no arrested were made.
