  • Carlson doubles down on targeting Dr. Jill Biden
  • She holds a doctoral degree in education
  • Her degree holds as much weight as Dr Pepper’s, the commentator quipped

Conservative political commentator Tucker Carlson jumped in the ring of controversy to echo comments that Dr. Jill Biden, the wife of President-elect Joe Biden, has something of an illegitimate degree.

The first lady holds a doctorate degree in education from the University of Delaware. Supporters of the incoming first lady came to her defense in the wake of an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal questioning her credentials.

"Madame First Lady—Mrs. Biden—Jill—kiddo..." the column from Joseph Epstein read. “A wise man once said that no one should call himself ‘Dr.’ unless he has delivered a child. Think about it, Dr. Jill, and forthwith drop the doc.”

Carlson, a Fox News commentator and vocal supporter of conservative ideologies, piggybacked on those comments. He said on his nightly program Tuesday that Biden’s degree was questionable.

"Jill Biden is not a doctor, no," Carlson said. "Maybe in the same sense Dr Pepper is."

One of the common critiques of the attacks on Dr. Biden is a comparison to late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., who held a PhD. in systemic theology from Boston University and was regularly addressed as "Dr. King."

Northwestern University, where the Journal opinion columnist once served as an adjunct professor, denounced the column as “misogynistic.”

Dr. Biden took to Twitter to defend herself in the wake of the Wall Street Journal controversy, arguing that accomplishments should be celebrated regardless of gender.

"Together, we will build a world where the accomplishments of our daughters will be celebrated, rather than diminished," she tweeted.

Carlson was the target of criticism on Twitter, with users having fun with his comparisons.

Dr. Biden has more than 30 years experience teaching at the college and high school levels. She still plans on teaching after Inauguration Day, when her husband will become the 46th president of the United States.
