Dua Lipa got emotional the first time she heard her song on the radio.

The “New Rules” singer recently opened up about herself during an interview with GQ, where she revealed her reaction to hearing herself on the radio for the first time since dropping her debut album. She recalled that the first of her songs to get radioplay was “Be the One,” a single from her self-titled debut album.

Dua clearly remembers the day she made her radio debut and the excitement she felt waiting for her song to be played.

“I knew it was gonna get played on the radio because it was being premiered by Annie Mac. I was in the studio that day, and because I knew exactly what time her radio slot is, I treated myself to a cab and I made sure: ‘Please can you turn the radio on?’” the 22-year-old singer told the magazine. “The whole way home, I had the radio on and I was waiting, and I was waiting, and I was waiting, and they still hadn’t played the song.”

Dua recalled that she got very emotional the moment she heard her single on the radio.

“I’d arrived home, I quickly ran through the door, turned the radio on, and the song started playing! I collapsed on the floor and I was in tears, and I just couldn’t believe what was happening. It was so exciting,” she gushed.

Dua only released her debut alum, “Dua Lipa,” in June 2017, but she has already gained massive success - including being hailed as 2017’s most-streamed female artist in the UK by Spotify, according to The Guardian. Her most successful single, “New Rules,” climbed to no. 8 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart this week.

Talking about the success of “New Rules,” Dua believes her music video for the song may have played a big part in its popularity. However, she still couldn’t believe the “crazy” success “New Rules” has achieved so far.

“The album came out, and it definitely streamed really well, but I always knew it was going to be the single. I just didn’t expect it to do this. But I don’t think anybody really expects a song to go as crazy as it does when they first release it, unless they’re a psychic,” she said.

Dua also shared that following the success of “New Rules,” she began receiving calls and messages of support from other successful female artists. The up-and-coming singer was especially thankful for the support as she is an advocate of “girls supporting each other.”

“So many cool female artists were reaching out. Lorde said it was one of her favorite videos she’d seen, and Zara Larsson was reaching out,” she recalled. “The message of the video is ‘Girls supporting each other,’ so it meant so much to me when other female artists truly had my back. I think it all just happened so fast. I didn’t expect it. But I still didn’t expect it to go to number one in the UK. I didn't!”

However, Dua may have broken her own “new rules” last week as she reportedly got back in touch with one of her exes after breaking up with musician Paul Klein. Shortly after parting ways with her boyfriend of five months, Dua is reportedly “messaging” ex-boyfriend and celebrity chef Isaac Carew, whom she broke up with in February 2017 after dating for two years, according to The Sun.

Dua has yet to comment on the rumors that she’s back with her ex, so fans will have to take the report with a grain of salt.
