Sunday's fifth episode of HBO's "Euphoria" ("'03 Bonnie and Clyde") took us on a deeper dive into the inner lives Maddy (Alexa Demie), Nate (Jacob Elordi), and co. With Rue (Zendaya) still acting as narrator, we're brought along as she takes us on an exploration into the private places that everyone on the show all works so hard to hide from one another.

This week, we begin to see the cracks and fallout of what transpired in the previous weeks, but before that happens, we are taken on a bit of a detour into other things.

The episode begins with a look into Maddy's backstory involving childhood pageants. Power dynamics at her mom's nail salon also shines a light into how she grew into her current self. What she saw gave young Maddy her foundational belief that she can use confidence and power to succeed in life.

Additionally, Kat (Barbie Ferreira) begins to lean more into who she is as a person and feel more powerful in her identity, which follows on the heels of her cam girl experimentation and being more assertive in her own ways. Her private self-discovery is explored semi-quietly, so others may only be aware of it due to her changes in wardrobe.

Thanks to an unusual chain of events - Maddy falling asleep in class and EMTs noticing bruising on her neck - Nate is then arrested for assault and Maddy's mother decides to press charges, which goes against her daughter's desires. Following his arrest, Nate is suspended and kicked off the football team.

Initially, when Nate's father Cal (Eric Dane) gets the call to go to the school regarding his son's pending arrest he arrives with the assumption that his presence has been requested due to his previous sexual encounter with Jules (Hunter Shafer) who, as we know, is 17. However, upon arrival, he realizes it is instead about Nate.

Later that night at a hotel, he confides in a stranger that his sons are exhibiting signs of rage, and, he wonders aloud, how is his lifestyle contributing to those signs?

In the aftermath, Maddy is left in tears at the police station as she has to have her sweater forcibly cut off and hear a police officer tell her that "the person who did this doesn't love you." We then see the extent of Nate's actions at the fair as Maddy is photographed by the officer. The makeup that Maddy previously applied in the episode is also removed, finally exposing all of the bruising on her body for the first time.

As an attempt to redirect the officers, Nate tells them during questioning at the station that Maddy was doing MDMA at the fair, and that while he had grabbed her by the arm and drug her away he "didn't choke her."

Additionally, he says that he knows Maddy had been with other guys during breakups, leading them to draw the conclusion that perhaps it was one of them who actually harmed her. At the end of the episode, the pair meet up at a hotel and hug. How will they move past what has happened? Can they?

As for Rue, she makes big steps this week in her journey towards true sobriety, as she admits to her weekly meeting that she had previously lied about the amount of time that she had been clean.

Nearing the end of the episode, Jules begins to contemplate and worry about her personal role and responsibility in Rue's recovery, which keeps her awake at the end of the episode while Rue sleeps beside her. As these concerns emerge, what will this mean for Rue's well-being in the future?

With everything so off balance, next week's episode will likely reveal a bit more into how each character will navigate the already-murky waters of the season.

"Euphoria" airs Sunday nights at 10 p.m. EST on HBO.
