The ex-boyfriend of a Florida mother found in an Alabama barn was extradited Thursday for allegedly abusing her corpse.

Marcus Spanvelo, 35, was extradited to St. Clair County, Alabama on felony charges of abuse of a corpse. The body of his ex-girlfriend, Cassie Carli, 37, was found in a shallow grave inside a barn in Alabama at one of the addresses associated with Spanvelo.

Spanvelo was arrested in Tennessee a day after her body was discovered. Spanvelo has not been charged in connection with Carli's death.

Carli was last seen on the evening of March 27, after meeting Spanvelo for a routine custody exchange of their 4-year-old daughter at a Florida restaurant parking lot, police said. Carli's body was discovered on April 3.

The St. Clair County Coroner Dennis Russell told Pensacola News Journal that he could not determine Carli's cause or manner of death.

Last week, Santa Rosa County officials dismissed charges against Spanvelo, accusing him of giving false information and tampering with evidence concerning a missing person investigation.

According to Alabama law, a person commits the crime of abuse of a corpse when they knowingly treat a human corpse in a way that would "outrage ordinary family sensibilities." The charge is a Class C felony punishable by up to 10 years.

Alabama District Attorney Lyle Harmon announced the investigation into Carli's disappearance and death is ongoing. He also said he appreciated the cooperation of Florida law enforcement.

"I will continue to lend them whatever support the law allows, in the hope that the Carli family will have closure," Harmon said.
