KEY POINTS

  • Parts of Texas will likely experience heavy showers and thunderstorms
  • Forecasters say there is a slight risk of excessive rainfall over parts of the Southern Plains
  • Excessive heat warnings issued for parts of California and Arizona

Weather warnings have been issued in different parts of the country as severe thunderstorms are expected in some areas while other places will likely experience extreme heat.

Excessive rainfall has been predicted in parts of Texas, whereas parts of southern California and western Arizona have been given excessive heat warnings and heat advisories.

The National Weather Service said the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic are likely to experience severe thunderstorms Wednesday. Southwest Texas and southeast New Mexico are likely to see flash flooding due to the heavy showers and thunderstorms.

The Weather Prediction Center (WPC) has issued a "slight risk of excessive rainfall over parts of the Southern Plains through Wednesday morning."

"Tropical moisture and upper-level energy will aid in producing showers and thunderstorms with heavy rain over the southern half of Texas," the WPC said in a report.

Urban areas, roads and small streams are most likely to see flash flooding.

Although the excessive rainfall is expected to eventually decrease in Texas, showers and thunderstorms with possible heavy rain will continue in the area through Thursday, the report said.

"Therefore, the WPC has issued a Marginal Risk of excessive rainfall over parts of the Southern Plains through Thursday," the center said. "The associated heavy rain will create localized areas of flash flooding, affecting areas that experience rapid runoff with heavy rain."

Areas near and on the Gulf Coast might also see showers and thunderstorms through Thursday.

In addition to this, the center "has issued a Moderate Risk of severe thunderstorms over parts of the Northeast / Mid-Atlantic / Central Appalachians through Wednesday morning." These thunderstorms could result in hail, frequent lightning and severe thunderstorm wind gusts. They also pose a small risk of tornadoes.

Parts of the country are also likely to experience extreme heat through Thursday and possibly see new record highs.

"Excessive Heat Warnings are over Southern California into parts of far western Arizona through Thursday," the WPC said. "Temperatures will be in the mid-hundreds with nighttime lows in the 80s."

Parts of the Pacific Northwest into the Northern Intermountain Region were also issued heat advisories through Thursday as high temperatures are expected to be in the upper-90s and low temperatures are expected to be in the mid-60s.

The report also said some locations will "have record high low temperatures." As a result of this, "cooling" will not take place overnight and could have aftereffects on the heat experienced over parts of the Northwest Coast.
