In a shocking incident, a man in India was arrested for allegedly drowning his 2-month-old baby girl because he felt the child was not his.

The man suspected his wife of having an affair because the child, according to him, did not resemble anyone in the family. The police arrested the suspect, identified only as Mallikarjuna, hailing from the state of Andhra Pradesh, on Friday, reported The News Minute.

Reports said the incident happened Thursday after Mallikarjuna took his wife Chittemma and their infant daughter to a nearby hospital for a medical check-up. While waiting for their appointment, the child started crying. Though Chittemma tried to calm the baby down, it continued wailing.

Mallikarjuna then reportedly told his wife he would pacify her by taking her around. Though hours passed, the accused did not return with the child. The panicked mother then approached the police and filed a complaint.

A search was immediately launched, and the police circulated the images of the baby and the accused on social media. They soon got a tip-off that Mallikarjuna was seen in the nearby Anantapur town. He was tracked down and questioned, after which he confessed to killing the child.

The man reportedly told the police he taped the child's mouth shut, put her in a gunny bag, and threw her into a water body. The accused told the police he suspected his wife had a relationship with someone else, according to The Times of India. He said the child did not resemble anyone in the family, and this prompted him to get rid of her.

A search team was immediately deployed to retrieve the child's body and after hours-long effort, the infant's lifeless body was fished out of the water. A murder case has been launched and the accused is cooperating with the investigation, the police said.

Recently, a 3-year-old girl child died in the Indian city of Jaipur after her enraged father allegedly slammed her on the ground. The father murdered the child because he was upset over his wife's refusal to wear a veil. Though the accused and his family secretly cremated the child's body, the incident came to light after the woman approached the police to report the crime.
