A father has been accused of killing his 14-year-old daughter as part of an occult ritual in India. The man believed his teenage daughter was "possessed by a ghost."

The accused, identified as Bhavesh Akbari, wanted to free his daughter of the "ghost" and decided to perform an exorcism.

A senior police officer told India Today that on the day of the incident, Akbari made his daughter wear old clothes and took her to a field in their village in the western Indian state of Gujarat. The man, along with his brother, made the girl stand in front of a bonfire for two hours.

The girl started developing "lumps" on her hands and feet due to heat exposure. The duo then brutally thrashed her. The teenager eventually died due to extreme torture, according to a police complaint filed against the accused.

Later, the duo wrapped the girl's body in plastic and blankets before burning her corpse at a crematorium. Police said the duo destroyed all evidence by burning them.

"We have booked the two brothers for murder and have detained them. We have also detained a suspect whom we believe was associated with the ritual that the two brothers performed for getting rid of the evil spirit," Jadeja told The Indian Express on Thursday.

The latest incident comes just days after a case of human sacrifice shocked India. Two women were allegedly killed in a remote village in the southern state of Kerala as part of an occult ritual. The women were beheaded and their bodies were cut into pieces for "economic prosperity."

"It was a human sacrifice for the financial benefit of that couple," a senior police officer said. The accused also allegedly cooked and ate the flesh of the victims.

All the suspects in the case have been arrested.
